A:I was born in Eunice Louisiana. I was raised by a single mother that traveled so you might say I was raised in Louisiana, Colorado, Tennessee, Florida, Missouri and Maine! I have lived in the Tampa Bay area for the last 5 years with my wife and daughter.
Q:What got you interested in being fit?
A:I always had an image in my mind starting from my elementary years. The seed was planted of being the "best" me early on. In my teenage years I ran with the wrong crowd and ended up homeless and ultimately addicted to heroin by the age of 16. That part of my life lasted for about 5 years. I began to realize that this destructive lifestyle did not define who I truly was as a person and finally sought treatment for my addiction. In my heart I knew I was meant for something more. At the time I had no idea what that was going to be but I knew I wanted to get back to the basics and that journey started in the gym. It was a way for me to push myself mentally and my body's transformation became my gauge of how well I was doing. Now it's been 11 years and and I still feel the same way that I did when I first stepped into the gym for the first time.... I want more!
Q:Describe your journey to the NPC...
A:You might say I became a competitive fitness athlete by accident! I was following a friend on Instagram that was competing at the time. His first show was nearby and I wanted to attend and support him. He took 1st and overall in physique and mentioned to me that he thought we would be a better match to compete against each other. A couple days later on a photo I posted on Instagram I mentioned, (as a joke), that he better watch out because I was coming after him! One thing led to another and other followers commented that I should compete at the next local show. It was a pretty simple decision after that point! I had too!! It was really quite comical because I had no idea what I was doing or how it worked but I was training hard and my diet was on point! I won 1st place and overall in Men's Physique at my first show. Within 30 days I qualified for and competed in Nationals and placed tenth out of 42 competitors in my height class. For me, that initial push was a blessing in disguise!
Q:Contrast your pre contest and off season diet...
A:My off season diet is my lifestyle. It is still structured although I raise my calories to 20 cals per pound of bodyweight. I still eat 6 meals a day but I tend to eye my portions rather than weigh them out. I am also a bit more lenient as far as certain snacks and when I choose to eat them. Pre contest diet I gradually bring my calories to 15 cals per pound of bodyweight. I weigh out and measure all of my meals. I tend to stick to a pretty bland diet of meats, carbs and fats. I rarely make an actual meal so to speak. Basically if you see me eating I’ll have chicken breast, sweet potatoes and almonds with UDOs oil. And I only eat high glycemic carbs in my first meal and post workout. Other than that I'm eating meat and potatoes!
Q:What music gets you pumped at the gym?
A:A variety! My top five favorite songs in the gym would probably be:
1: Infamous by Abandon All Ships
2: Fortune Days by The Glitch Mob
3: Andare By Ludovico Einaudi
4: If It Be Your Will by Antony
5: Try'n Hold Me Back by Rob Bailey and The Hustle Standard.
Q:If you're not at the gym, we can find you...?
A:At the grocery store! I typically don't buy anything either. I just walk the aisles and look at all the different food and the labels, (mainly of junk food). It's a bit torturous at times because I often do this when I'm dieting. But it's not unlike me to spend two hours doing this and leave empty handed. I am always hoping to find some gem that will satisfy my hunger.
Q:If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
A:Hmmmm...If I had one superpower I would want to be able to cook, weigh out, put my meals in the appropriate containers and clean the dishes without having to do any of that! Not sure if that would be considered a superpower but it would simplify my life and give me a little more time.
Q:Lol! Favorite movie of all time?
A:Reign Over Me with Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle.
Q:You're on death row. You have one last meal. Describe it.
A:Easy!!! Baklava, cheesecake with whip cream, and an assortment of girls scout cookies!!
Q:Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
A:Besides competing as an IFBB Pro on the physique division. I'm working on a project called Champions Breed Champions where ultimately I want to be able to give back to underprivileged youth or adults that have a dream and the will to be the best person they can be while having their best physique. I want to help them achieve their goals and help them to be able to compete. That is my biggest goal for the 5 year mark!
Q:That sounds like a worthy cause! Can you give us your Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, blog and website handles?
