A:I am originally from Galien, Michigan. Small town girl, my town’s population is 500. I grew up on a farm raising livestock and, of course, I was a tomboy/farm girl. I still am at heart. ;) After high school I decided to move to South Bend, Indiana where I worked for four years and went to college. Now I reside in Phoenix, Arizona.
Q:First time at the gym, you felt...?
A:OVERWHELMED! That’s how I felt when I walked into my first real gym. I had always been very athletic growing up. I played basketball, volleyball, and softball. I was never scared of a small high school gym, but you still would not find me in there during gym class. Three years ago, you couldn’t get me to step foot in a gym. Like so many that have never lifted, I was self-conscious because I had no clue what I was doing. The first gym I ever stepped foot in was Any Time Fitness in Indiana. I felt so out of place when I walked in and had no idea what machine to use or how to even use a dumbbell. I didn’t pay attention in gym class I guess. LOL! Let’s just say I only stayed about 10 minutes, left and never went back. Even though I wanted to pursue fitness and competing, I knew that only running would not be sufficient and I would have to get over my fear of the gym. Once I moved to Arizona, I went to Mountainside Fitness and forced myself to stay there. I’m so glad I did! Three years later, you cannot get me out of the gym. I close gyms down these days.
Q:I know the feeling, lol. When did you know you had the physique to compete on stage?
A:That’s a really good question! Since 2010, I have wanted to compete. Of course, back then I definitely did not have the physique. Once I was in high school, my diet and lifestyle took a turn for the worse and that really started to show at age 22 which is when I realized I really needed a change. Since I have a competitive edge, I thought competing in fitness would be perfect. Once I started training with Damian and saw how everything was coming together, the great changes my body was making (even though I was recovering from a bad car accident), that is when I truly knew that I had the physique, I could compete, and do well in this sport.
Q:Why did you choose the NPC?
A:The NPC (National Physique Committee) is the largest and most well-known amateur bodybuilding organization. I knew what it stood for way before I ever lifted a dumbbell because I had heard other people talk about it. When I did my research, saw all the great athletes that compete within the NPC, and checked out the website, I was hooked and wanted that challenge. My theory is to be your best you must compete with the best.
Q:Detail your pre contest diet...
A:My coach is really great at customizing my contest diet meal plan. My body changes quite often due to my thyroid and hormone imbalances. Sometimes, I can be a lot of work for him. His reply to this would be, “Not sometimes, all the time”. I’m sure. LOL! So, it is always a little different depending on how my body is reacting. I am set up on two different meal plans that I alternate between. They consist of protein shakes, lean proteins, complex carbs, dark leafy green vegetables, fatty proteins in the evening, and almonds or cashews. I have learned to be pretty creative with the little food variety I have.
Q:Tell us about AZProPhysiques.
A:After moving to Arizona, I followed Damian Segovia for about 2 years before I jumped on board with Team AFD, it was the best decision I ever made. He’s a great trainer and he really understands me. I think that is so important when it comes to picking a trainer. AZ Pro Physiques/Team AFD is the best support system anyone could ask for, truly an amazing group of trainers who want nothing but the best for their clients and athletes. They provide a great environment to train, reach your weight loss or fitness goals, and grow.
Q:Favorite cheat meal?
A:Any competitor dieting for a long period of time that gets asked this question could probably rattle off hundred things in 5 seconds, or maybe that’s just me. LOL! I could go on forever with this one but I will keep it short. I am so lucky that Damian lets me have sushi. I am a sushi freak and to top it off I get to enjoy frozen yogurt after. So when Saturday comes around it’s the best day of the week for me. Plus these are two things I really enjoyed before I started dieting besides eating cupcakes... oh and pizza… okay, I will stop now!
P.s. When I’m really close to a show he takes that cheat meal away, boy do I become a crabby little diva and D can attest to that! Ha-ha
A:Wedding Crashers! That’s one movie I never get tired of. I’m a big fan of Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn.
Q:Shoes or sneakers?
A:I am from the Midwest… I like running around bare foot. On leg days I prefer just socks. I own a lot of black socks just so I can’t see how dirty they really get. LOL, I get the craziest looks at the gym sometimes.
Q:What's next for you?
A:The next competition I am going to be competing in is the USA Championships in Las Vegas, July 26th - 27th. I am so excited for this one even though this is only my second time on stage. It’s the best of the best and it’s a great challenge and opportunity. I’m so blessed and fortunate I can compete. It’s a great adrenaline rush!
Q:Can you give us all of your social media handles?
