A:I was born, raise, and rest the head, (as well as the rest of my body), in hot hot hot Phoenix, AZ. I sometime call it Pho Town, but that's mainly because I'm Vietnamese and my viet spot has THE best Pho ever. But, I digress.
Q:Lol. How did you "find" fitness?
A:I found fitness trying to "find" everything else. Everything else either led me further away from what mattered in life, or just left me completely empty. After I allowed God to take my pride and selfish desire out of the picture, I found new ways of spending my time. Weights are my anti-drug. Eating clean is my detox. Improving myself is the high.
Q:I like that. What's your typical week long diet like?
A:Contest prep: I will stick to high protein, moderate carb, and moderate fat. And I keep the recipes/meal plans basic. I like to spend most of my time focusing on my family, friends, and PUSHers-not going psychotic over my food.
7am- 3 egg whites, 2 eggs, 3/4 cup oats, 1 cup blueberries, agave nectar, vitamin stack
11:30am- apple/almond butter
12pm- 4 oz chicken with 1 cup brown rice, 1 medium sweet potato (i make fries), 1 cup spinach, 1/2 avocado
3pm- apple (pre-workout)
5pm-protein shake or smoothie
8pm- 5 oz chicken or fish with 1 cup brown rice and veg (broccoli/spinach/asparagus)
Q:How's the modeling going?
A:I'm currently working on Magnum. But I can Derelict my own balls.
Seriously? Okay. I'll shoot here and there, but have been more focused on the blog and business side of my life. I am always down and ready to be in front of the camera though. Any incredible photographers out there? Get at me.
Q:I find your blogs inspiring, humorous, engaging and refreshingly transparent. How did you accumulate your writing style?
A:Well that's a huge compliment- considering the fact that most of the time I am talking out loud as I type and ramble. I don't believe in punctuation if I am not actually taking a breather in real life and anyone who knows me knows I very rarely take breathers when I'm on a roll because I just have to say what I got on my mind before I forget, A.D.D, bacon, bath tub, bubbles...what?
My writing style came purely from wanting my readers to "hear" me as they would hear me if we were sitting face to face over tea. It is a huge blessing that people actually like it. I mean, I never really felt heard until I started this...
Q:You "talk to animals". I have to ask. Do they answer back...?
A:Absolutely. But I promised never to discuss personal matters. For privacy reasons. You understand.
Q:Understood. Describe PUSH...
A:PUSH is two parts. The two parts are most effective when used together, however, they very well can be used individually.
1. PUSH | Consists of PUSHers which are, to use layman's terms (don't you hate when people say that?), they are my clients and I am their coach. I create personalized fitness and nutrition plans, bikini posing, contest prep from start to stage, etc. Basically, I work with the PUSHer to see what they want, and then, we evaluate what they need and what part I will play in that. Some just want a monthly Skype sesh to discuss and have a little Q and A. I love those. But don't request anything freaky deaky or else I'll report you to the proper authorities.
2. 30dayPUSH aka 3DP aka best thing ever. |
How did this start and why? It started as a way of keeping me accountable and encouraged when I first started training for my shows. I found that I needed to seriously babysit myself. I am a closet eater by nature. I am lazy. I give up. I complain. But I chose and choose daily to harness those things and melt them into oblivion. You helped me. I NEEDED to post photos every day, or else the night before, I’d loose control and eat a box, (yes a whole box), of skinny cow ice cream sandwiches-which aren’t really that skinny if you didn’t already know. Anyway, I could no longer “get away with” my odd secretive overeating obsession.
It started catching on. Readers and “not yet readers” alike began asking how to join, explained how much they’ve been waiting for something like this. Something free. Something inspirational. Something motivational.
And they did it.
This past 3odayPUSH boasted over 200 PUSHers internationally that came together as the ORIGINAL fitfam. They set out to conquer. Not anyone else, they conquered their own insecurity. We stuck together. We fought. We encouraged. We criticized. We showed love. We showed disappointment. We showed our fat. And then we showed our smiles. Some kept shirts one. Some took them off. No judgement. No fear. Just. You. Me. Us.
Since then, there have been 2 other fitness bloggers (that I know of) who have taken the name “fitfam” and the 30dayPUSH and attempted to make it their own. Some of you have asked if it makes me upset, if I’m going to shut theirs down? No, I don’t think I will. Upset. No. Proud that your incredible growth, words, lives have inspired people to want to mimic? F*CK YES.
You possibly will be taking the first and most important step to the healthier you. Or, this may be a furtherance of your already fit lifestyle. Thinking of becoming healthy is one thing, but taking relevant action towards your goal is another. You are movement.
“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.” -1 Corinthians 9:24-27
Basically. We are a family.
Q:Where are you navigating your career to?
A:It would be silly for me to put a cap on the future, but I will say, I love writing. I love being on camera. I love talking. I love people. And I love life. I really would like to be on TV just so I can sit with my friends on the weekend and laugh at my occasional dyslexia/stutter.
Q:Your greatest inspiration has been...?
A:Ready to get a little sappy and soggy with me? God's incredibly gracious love for me. I deserve to be angry, miserable, and alone still. But He loves us so much that He gives us a way to experience more beauty, more joy, than we ever would be able to give ourselves. I get tired and exhausted and my mind is like a ticking time bomb always a second away from giving myself the go-ahead to implode, but He always fills me. He always gives me strength, even when I have none left of my own.
I just want to be a vessel that can be used. That inspires me.
Q:Can you give us your Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, blog and website handles?
