Q:Why did you get into the fitness lifestyle?
A:I was always a pretty athletic person. I started distance running in my 20’s but the endurance training left me very skinny and emaciated looking. I was very self conscious about how thin I was. I felt like a bone rack and I would wear layers under my clothes to add size to my frame. I couldn't seem to put any weight on, no matter what I tried or how much I ate. I thought i would give lifting a try.
I was so self conscious in the weight room in the beginning. I would wear big baggy sweat shirts to cover up my stick thin arms. With time and consistency, I started seeing changes in my body composition. I was actually getting little muscles!! The gains I was making encouraged me to keep at it and educate myself on eating clean and proper supplementation. It didn’t happen overnight- but eventually I was lifting with the big boys and really seeing great definition. I was looking for an avenue to feed my competitive nature so I decided to try a local physique competition. I placed second and that’s where it all started. I haven’t looked back since.
Q:How do you meal prep for your physique competitions?
A:When it comes time to prep for stage I cut all sugar, alcohol and refined carbs from my diet. I do bulk cooking once a week to ensure I’m able to stick with my diet- even if my schedule is packed. Lots of lean protein, green veggies, and complex carbs- fats from avocado, ground flax, almonds, walnuts and Omega3's. I make sure I drink at least 5L of water and never let myself get hungry.
Q:Tell us about your transition to fitness model... and where have you been featured?
A:My fitness modelling career began when the editors of a major publication saw a picture of me and learned that I had such a large family. They did a feature on me. The reader response was so great that they called me to do a photo shoot. That snowballed into being a regularly featured model. That exposure lead to other publications interest… and the rest is history as they say. I've been featured in most major fitness publications on stands with 5 Oxygen Magazine covers and 3 other industry covers.
Q:Awesome. You're also a personal trainer. What's the greatest piece of advice you give your clients?
A:Best way to build muscle;
Best way to lose fat;
Eat clean / Increase muscle mass/reduce stress
Make small change in your life daily and celebrate each success towards your goal
It's not about being a size 4- it's about being the best YOU that you can be!
Q:What is a Lifestyle Consultant?
A:It's someone that helps goal set with their clients in many areas- not just fitness and nutrition. Often we need to recognize why we "fall off the wagon" so often and have self destructive behavior- as a lifestyle consultant I work with my clients to help establish new routines and habits to help them reach their fitness and personal goals.
Q:Tell us about being a published author...
A:It's been very rewarding to have been able to get my message out in a medium that can be shared so easily and readily accessible to people. The book is called Souls Principles.. 6 simple steps to a whole new you.. (available on my website FDLifestyle.com). It addresses some of what my consulting covers, like reflecting on why we work so hard for such a short period of time and then give up on our lifestyle, personal, or health goals?
It’s not for lack of knowledge or desire. So often we get caught up in our negative and destructive mind traps that we sabotage our dreams and desires. In this guide, I look at some of the more common brain ruts that we struggle with, to allow us to break the damaging cycles and get the reader closer to the person they want to be.
Q:What is www.FDlifestyle.com?
A:It's my website where I offer lots of tips on nutrition, fitness, motivation and inspiration. I have a store on it that offers meal plans and training routines as well as audio seminars and my book for download!
Q:Can you give us all of your social media handles?
