A:I was born in San Francisco, CA the best city on the planet. Raised just outside of Berkeley and consider myself to be a "high-maintenance hippie" and now live about 50% of the time in Palm Desert, CA (just outside of Palm Springs) with my teen age boys and the rest of the time ALL OVER THE PLACE...especially LA, Florida and New York City.
Q:Why did you become a Nutrition and Fitness expert?
A:I never remember becoming one, I always remember being into nutrition and fitness from the movement classes I started taking as a little kid. I started studying nutrition when I was 12 (Berkeley is a hot bed for this) and started teaching dance and exercise in my teens and was one of the first personal trainers in the country - before we had a name for us!
Q:Describe "Burst Training."
A:High-intensity interval training (HIIT), or burst training, involves short (20 – 60 second) bursts at a high intensity where your body's demand for oxygen is much higher than what it can supply. The metabolic “stress” this creates for your body to repay that oxygen debt means you burn more fat in less time. I combine burst training with weight resistance in my 4 x 4 Workouts, which you can knock out in just 15 minutes, three times a week. It's quite a workout in very little time! Your readers can get a free workout at www.jjsfitclub.com.
Q:Can you describe your typical week long workout routine?
A:Since I travel there is no typical - I am now training for road racing so I have been doing a lot of HIIT cycle training. On my easy days I do upper body training, core and leg training. I like to take advantage of what's fun to do where I am so if I am at a big tall hotel I run the stairs (Vegas rocks for this), if I am in LA I hike Runyon Canyon or rollerblade down at the beach. And if there is Stand Up Paddle Boarding I am all in.
Q:What does your own diet look like?
A:I love protein smoothies for breakfast and sometimes do double shakes for breakfast and lunch. I use pea/ rice protein, organic berries, flaxseed or chia seeds, and So Delicious unsweetened coconut milk. Your readers can get my ultimate shake recipe here: http://www.jjvirgin.com/ultimate-shake/
Meals include some kind of clean, lean protein like wild salmon, free-range chicken, or grass-fed beef. I eat tons of green vegetables, a little bit of high-fiber starch like sweet potatoes or lentils, and good fats like avocado or olive oil. It's the same plate combo I recommend to my clients and readers! If I am traveling my go to restaurant is Chipotle - salad, fajita veggies, chicken, guacamole, a little black beans and salsa! And I am also in love with Coffee Bean's iced green teas.
Q:You are the author of "Six Weeks to Sleeveless & Sexy". Can you summarize this work for us?
A:"Six Weeks" was about more than getting great arms. You will get great arms if you follow the plan, of course, but it's also about choose the right foods, the right exercise, the right lifestyle plan to burn fat and look and feel amazing. You can get my sexy arms workout at http://jjvirgin.com/arms
My upcoming book, "The Virgin Diet," will be out in December. In this book I talk about potential food sensitivities and how removing them (temporarily or permanently) can trigger fast fat loss and eliminate many symptoms.
Q:You're also the co-star of TLC's "FreakyEaters". Describe the show and how you became part of it...
A:The casting agent for that show had casted me for some other things and thought of me when the project came up. When I heard the premise I loved it because I knew it could help everyone be healthier - after all if you get someone who has lived on potatoes to eat broccoli, then surely the viewer at home can start doing some of the easy action steps we gave the participant as well. It had enough of a freak out factor to get people to start watching but then as you started watching you realized that this person wasn't so different from you.
Q:What is your next life goal?
A:I have several. One, I want to continue to deepen my relationship with my teen boys WHILE giving them their freedom to learn how to become great men. Two is for The Virgin Diet: Drop 7 Foods, Lose 7 Pounds, Just 7 Days to become and stay a New York Times Bestseller and help 1 million people lose fat fast and KEEP IT OFF over the next 2 years. Three is to speak at TED on this topic. Four is to totally transform healthcare by helping other health care professionals to get their message and passion out to the world. Five is to create an amazing relationship with my soulmate, (still looking). Six is to start road race cycling, AND winning! Seven is to make sure I maintain some semblance of life balance while doing all of this!
Q:What motivates you day in and day out?
A:I believe I am here to empower people worldwide to take control of their health, if people knew better and how simple it really can be, they will do better and by doing this we will ultimately change the world - the economy, the crime rates, happiness, relationships, everything improves as health improves. It is the rising tide.
Q:If you had to thank one person for your success, who would it be and why?
A:Hmmm... my birth mom for having the courage to have me and give me up to the right parents to raise me and my parents for putting up with me as I was a real PITA teenager! :)
