A:I was born in Michigan and I had moved every single year as a young girl until we (my mother and my two younger brothers) finally settled down in San Francisco, CA. A few years after that, my mother died and so my brothers and I were split-up and forced to move to different homes with different families to live. I went to live with my grandparents on their cattle ranch in East Texas…quite the culture shock for a young 17 year old girl..from the city to the country! Once I graduated high school, I left to go back to college in California. A few years later I moved to Dallas to live and work.
Q:Why did you get into the health and fitness field?
A:As a child, I grew up poor and struggled to even eat healthy. To say that living a healthy lifestyle was tough - is an understatement. My personal story is a childhood challenge that involved not only lack of money but also my mother's poor health choices. I learned very early in life about the power of choice. My mother's choices created a sad quality of life for her. She was very overweight, she smoked heavily and much more. Most of the memories I have of my mother are of her mostly not well..suffering from one illness or another. I intuitively knew, even as a young child, that she could make other choices - healthier choices. Because of my mother’s lifestyle choices, she died at the very young age of 36.
Like so many others, my mother didn't feel as if she had choice in her life, nor did she feel she deserved it. Because of my experience with my mother, it has become my mission, my passion to help others know that there are other choices instead of the feeling that 'this is my lot in life.'
It gives me a tremendous sense of joy to see the success that my clients, readers and others have experienced. Now you know the deeper reason why I do what I do.
My experiences as a child led me on an inspired path to helping others and that involved receiving my Doctorate in Psychology and my Certification as a Nutritional Consultant and Life Coach.
Q:You're one of the best fat loss experts in America. How did you become this highly recognized?
A:Through my best-selling book 'Fire-Up Your Fat Burn!' along with numerous media appearances (including television), my articles (which has been shared across multiple social media+), I am the host for the popular show “Creating Optimum Health” local and national speaking events and more.
Q:Huffington Post lists you as a "Top 16 Health Expert" What do you contribute to this distinction?
A:I was very honored to be named one of the ‘Top 16 Health and Fitness Experts’ by the Huffington Post (alongside Dr. Oz and Dave Zinczenko, author of ‘Eat This, Not That’). I believe it was for the reasons stated above and my accessibility on social media. I see every follower as a friend, one who I can build a relationship with. In any relationship, it is about give and take..striking that all-important balance. I try to provide quality information that people can use in their daily lives to create optimal health and weight loss. I also believe that mindset is key in anything we do, so I always have motivation, inspiration and other tips to create a better life included as well.
Q:What experts in the health and fitness field do you admire?
A:I truly admire anyone who takes that step to create better health or fitness. People, who have the courage to step into healthy change, are not only affecting their lives, but are quietly changing other people’s lives as a living, breathing example.
There are many leaders in the field of health and fitness that I admire. I admire Dr. Joseph Mercola for his tenacity and courage in providing leading-edge health information. Dr. Robert Lustig is another leader in the field of health in regard to his research on sugar and the enormity of its impact on our health. Marion Nestle has been teaching the USA about healthy eating. She focuses on how science and society influence dietary habits— and how people can change these habits. Lance Armstrong is an amazing athlete both in mind and body – facing incredible challenges with indomitable strength. Bob Choat is another amazing role model and athlete. A renowned Martial Artist, he is able to do 57 pull-ups non-stop – the average 20 year old male can do only one. Cory Everson is a top female body builder that won the Ms. Olympia contest six years in a row from 1984 to 1989. She was able to show that a woman can be physically strong, beautiful and feminine as well. Ernestine Shepherd is the oldest competitive female body builder in the world. She exemplifies that age is only a number. She is a true walking and talking inspirational role model of fitness for any age. The above people are a few examples of many people that I admire. They not only have a gift, but they also have that personal fortitude and commitment to excellence.
Q:You have been featured on ABCs "Good Morning Texas". Describe that moment...
A:One memory I have is my very first appearance on ‘Good Morning Texas’ it was exciting and entertaining, to say the least. I had prepared for that day..or so I thought. I remembered I forgot to prepare the lemons I would need for my interview. So I proceeded to slice the lemons in the studio, when OUCH! I cut my finger! My finger bled and bled and wouldn’t stop. I was in the Green Room with a HUGE bandage around it and when they came in to mic me up - my finger was still bleeding. Finally, one minute before I went live on air, in the studio, it stopped..but didn’t stop me! Now that’s.. excitement!
Q:You have authored the book, "Fire Up Your Fat Burn!” Give the readers a synopsis of this work...
A:My best-selling book ‘Fire-Up Your Fat Burn!’ gives the fundamental reasons why what you are doing is making you fat and the secrets to stop fat storage in its tracks – quickly and easily. You do not have to diet, count points or calories. By applying what is in the book, the nutrition and fitness plan (which takes just 12 minutes, 3 times a week), you will never be hungry or experience cravings – and you will create rapid and lasting weight loss.
Q:What does your workout routine look like?
A:I use High Intensity Interval Training as my go-to work out and I LOVE IT! It is superior in keeping highly fit and lean. You can find me on the elliptical performing HIIT or doing a variety of different exercises such as a basic 5 exercise circuit that includes push-ups, squats, pull-ups and squat thrusts.. HIIT style..along with additional core work and strength training.
Q:How about your diet, what does your nutrition look like?
A:I emphasize veggies at every meal and protein. I minimize my carbohydrate intake in the form of grains – especially processed grains such as wheat..I avoid. Excess processed carbohydrate intake is linked to inflammation. Inflammation is the core cause of most illness and disease. Inflammation also contributes to weight gain and faster aging as well. Inflammation and how it changes gene expression are an important part of my focus in educating others to create weight loss and optimal health success.
