Interview with Fitness Competitor Andrea Flakes aka @RedFitnish

    Q:Born and raised in Houston?

A:I was raised right outside of Houston, in Cypress until high school. I later moved to southeast/central Houston in which I currently reside and have been for the past 9 years.

Q:Do you remember the first time you were in a gym?

A:I got my first gym membership March 2012, before then I used the outdoors nearby community centers to get my  fix.

Q:When did you realize that you could compete in a bikini competition?

A:This has been a long journey for me. I did not seriously get into fitness until about the summer of 2009. I was 240 from stress and poor eating habits. I had been overweight since about 3rd grade and by 2009 is when I realized that I had to take control of my life. I lost about 60 pounds in 4 months through running and aerobics, doing two-a-days on a 1,000 calorie diet. From that point forward I set mini goals (getting under 200 lbs, then getting to single numbered dress sizes, smaller arms & legs, etc.) After that I was addicted!! I became obsessed! So in a nutshell, it was a series of constant improvement and reaching goals to go to that next level of fitness. I saw photos from a member of my previous church competing. I then Googled "fitness competing" and "bodybuilding" and fell in love! I thought it was amazing to be able to work towards your full potential and get recognized for all the hard work and discipline that is put into the sport. I actually competed in Figure for my first competition MuscleMania LoneStar May 18th and placed 1st place Figure Open Tall and I will go on to compete for the second time in August 3, 2013 at MuscleMania Space City.

Q:What does a typical week long workout look like for you?

A:I do some sort of fasted cardio every morning anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. I usually enjoy running 3-6 miles, sprint intervals, spinning or the stair master. In the evenings my workouts focused on my weight training. I start with a 15-20 minute warm up circuit, then weights are usually divided. For example...Back/shoulders, biceps/triceps, quads/calves, glutes/hams (I split legs or else I’ll be in the gym all night). I train abs daily and do at least 30 minutes of cardio after weight training.

Q:Compare your off season diet to your pre season diet...

A:Off season I revert to clean eating I allow my back dairy, natural sugars and more carbs in my diet for bulking purposes...during season I cut back on starchy carbs, dairy, natural sugars, etc... and any cheats I have are clean cheats.

Q:The most important aspect of working out and eating right would be....?

A:It's so important to listen to your body and push yourself out of your comfort zone but create a balance to where you do not overexert, it causes unnecessary stress and possible injury. Mixing up your routine and taking those off days will maximize your results, I am impulsive so taking the rest days were super hard for me but I later realized I needed them. In training your diet will take you from just being fit to being shredded all the science calculations and formulas put into creating the perfect meal plan is essential. Your diet constantly changes along with your workout regimen depending on what improvements need to be made for that week.

    Q:Favorite cheat meal?

A:My favorite cheat meal is Mexican food and frozen yogurt.

Q:Favorite thing to do when not training?

A:I live to travel and create new clean recipes for my followers and clients. I also enjoy catching up with family and friends and just plain old relaxing and working on projects I gave going on at the time.

Q:In 5 years you want to be....?

A:A fitness icon!!! I want to run a successful lucrative business in fitness and changing lives, quit my corporate life and work for myself doing what I love.
